In this Ted Talk, Greg Smith explains to his audience what the American dream really is. It is an idea that has a different meaning for each and every person in America. It includes many American values such as trust, cleanliness, diversity, education, safety, mobility, benefits, and more (Living the American Dream). These values are things that every American believes they need to be successful at fully achieving the American dream. Steve Tobak also agrees with importance of the value in equality in achieving the American dream (The American Dream Is Alive and Well). Equality is vital the dream because it provides opportunity for everyone so they have a chance at succeeding. To my understanding, all of the values that were stated in Smith’s speech were accurate, and I believe that everyone does have a different dream because some people may want to start a family while others may never want to have kids, so it’s all based on personal opinion and liking.
I enjoyed this Ted Talk because it touched on the fact hat everyone has a different American Dream than the person sitting next to them, and that there are many different values that make up someones version of the American dream. I learned that at the time the video was created, over half of Americans believed that they were living the American dream or a quality life, and I would have guessed that most people would say that they are not.
"The American dream is no different now than it was 50 years ago, the only thing that changes is us.”
