Awakening The American Dream by Kevin Maggiacomo
The American Dream is to be successful and the have opportunities for a better life. In 1988, World Magazine named the United States the number one country in the world for the best opportunities. Kevin Maggiacomo believes that the American Dream does not even belong to America. He thinks it should just be the Human Dream because all humans strive for the best, and that level of success should not be limited to America. He believes that the American Dream would benefit if more perspectives added their voices into it and if the people that created the idea of the American dream would listen to others with different thoughts than their own. he said, "excluding people from the American dream is just as big a problem for those of us who are living it, as it is for those who are not" (Awakening the American Dream).
Maggiacomo used pathos by sharing the story of his grandmother. She immigrated from Italy to America to start a wine business, but prohibition shut her business down and she had nowhere else to turn. Then she decided to start a loaning company which turned out to be one of the biggest banks in New England. This story made the audience feel like the American dream could be achieved because he gave a real life example of how it did happen for someone else. He used ethos in this story as well by the fact that Maria was a member of his own family had went through a problem that many people in the audience may have been facing.
This speech connects with The American Dream Is Alive and Well. Steve Tobak says, “Attaining the American dream is a function of intelligence, capability, person choice, work ethic, achievement, upbringing and luck” (The American Dream Is Alive and Well). Maggiacomo’s grandmother, Maria, was an example of this because she luckily had enough money to start her loaning it to others.
